I made this delicious apple pie for my mother’s birthday, and needless to say, she loved it! When you think of apple pie spices, you automatically think of cinnamon. However, the nutmeg gives it more depth and creates a warm, nutty flavor. This dessert is so comforting and an essential treat for the fall season!

Ingredients:

For the crust:

For the Filling:

  • ½ cup light brown sugar

  • ½ cup white granulated sugar

  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 & ½ tablespoons cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

  • ½ lemon

  • 2 lb Granny Smith Apples, peeled and sliced thinly

  • 1 egg

  • ¼ cup milk

  • 2 tablespoons chilled, unsalted butter

Instructions:

  1. Prepare two pie crusts according to directions. When ready, preheat the oven to 375°.

  2. Core, peel, and thinly slice the apples and add them to a large bowl.

  3. In a small bowl, juice the lemon half and remove any seeds that fall out. Pour the juice over the apple slices and toss.

  4. In a separate small bowl, combine the sugars, flour, and spices.

  5. Add sugar mixture to the apple slices. Toss well to completely coat.

  6. Fill a prepared pie dish with the filling.

  7. Roll out the second batch of pie dough and cut into 1” strips. Weave strips over fruit filling to create a lattice crust. (*Link a tutorial*)

  8. Pinch or crimp the bottom crust with the top crust to seal.

  9. Whisk the egg and milk together in a small bowl and evenly brush the top crust with the mixture. Sprinkle additional sugar over the top crust and dot with chilled butter.

  10. Bake at 375° for 30-40 minutes or until the pie is golden brown and bubbling. Cover the pie with aluminum foil if the crust begins to get too brown.

  11. Cool on a wire rack before cutting. Serve with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or whipped cream. Enjoy!
