Derby Day Charcuterie Hors d’Oeuvres
The 2021 Kentucky Derby is right around the corner! When I was a kid, I would get so excited about the southern tradition of wearing a big sunhat and watching the contenders from my living room race for the roses at Churchill Downs. My family’s Derby Day parties have varied over the years— sometimes they would consist of 5-10 people, and other times, it was just me and my momma, a party of 2! However you choose to celebrate this year, these simple hors d’oeuvres are easy as 1, 2, 3, and they are a lovely appetizer or make a great addition to a charcuterie spread.
You can use whatever type of grapes you prefer for this easy recipe, but I prefer California Black Seedless Grapes. They are so sweet and pair perfectly with fresh mozzarella and savory prosciutto.
Mozzarella pearls would also be perfect to use; however, my local grocery store can be a little limited sometimes, so if you are unable to find them, you can also purchase pre-sliced mozzarella and quarter the slices. When life gives you lemons…am I right?!
Just grab a toothpick, fold up a little bit of prosciutto, add a grape, and voila! You can also make these a day ahead and store them in an airtight container in the fridge.
You can make as many of these as you need. I made about 30 and had some leftover, but if you are having a small gathering, I would recommend making about 50.
Ingredients:
toothpicks
1 lb black seedless grapes
1 (16 oz) package fresh mozzarella cheese
2 (3 oz) packages prosciutto
Instructions:
Quarter each mozzarella slice and add to a toothpick. If you are using mozzarella pearls, you can just add one pearl to the toothpick.
Using a small, sharp knife, quarter a slice of prosciutto. Take one of the quarters, fold, and add to the toothpick.
Lastly, add a grape, serve, and enjoy!
